Story Map and Updated List of All Gender Restrooms
This story map is a student project conducted by Wylie Crowther & Sean O’Rourke, students in the UPP 461: Geographic Information Systems for Planning and Policy class with instructor Dr. Andrea Craft. The project was looking at both finding where the All Gender Restrooms were at UIC and if those restrooms were accessible to students.
This project aims to create an all-gender restroom map for the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in collaboration with the university’s Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC). This project is necessary as the GSC only lists these bathrooms with directions.
The university’s current overlay map is outdated, difficult to find and offers no directional help. Creating an interactive and detailed map is much needed for UIC’s two campuses.
Why is this important?
All-gender restrooms are a necessity in schools and other publicly accessible institutions to provide safe and equitable amenities to transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. It is often reported that many transgender or gender-nonconforming people will plan their days around when to use the restroom. They often face discrimination when entering a restroom that conforms to the societal gender binary. This highlights the importance of this topic in providing accessible restrooms to everyone.
